NDC flagbearership race: It’s not going to be a hot race, Mahama will win – John Dumelo

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential election between John Mahama and Kojo Bonsu, according to award-winning actor John Dumelo, won't be very competitive.

Delegates have already proclaimed the former president the winner of the flagbearer contest, according to the previous candidate for the Ayawso West Wuogon constituency.

"No, there can never be a close contest between Kojo Bonsu and John Mahama. The previous President will win easily, in my opinion.

What I want is for him to at least win by more than 95%. The delegates and my convictions both state the same thing, I Mr. Dumelo stated again in a JoyNews interview on Saturday that he didn't think anyone would vote against the former president, but he was confident Mr. Mahama would receive the most votes polled in his constituency.

“…I doubt anybody would vote against the former president but of course, it’s a democracy, you would have people vote against him for their own reasons but I hope and pray that in Awayaso West Wuogon, the former president would get at least 95 per cent here.”

The actor-turned-politician expressed his surprise at Dr. Kwabena Duffour's decision to withdraw from the presidential contest by saying he was not surprised.

Dr. Kwabena Duffour publicly announced his withdrawal from the NDC's impending flagbearer election on Friday, May 12.

The former governor of the Bank of Ghana said during a news conference that his decision was based on his complaints about the procedures surrounding the party's impending primaries, particularly the voters register.

He outlined the numerous anomalies that have tarnished the process and how the party leadership has failed to address them.

In response to this, John Dumelo stated that it is democratic to see candidates withdraw from the race during elections. "Yes and no, I mean, in a democracy, you have contestants always withdrawing at a point in time. Last four years, Kojo Bonsu pulled out during the race. "This year you have one of them pulling out and then you now have Dr Duffour pulling out yesterday so it's not surprising at all that he pulled out at the last minute.
